Counselling Training in BSL

The Diploma in Integrative Counselling taught in BSL started in October 2009 and the taught element of the course will complete in November 2011. There are 19 students on the course. There are no plans to run the course again for the timebeing. Once the course has finished we will scope the Mental Health and Deafness workforce and decide what training courses will be our next priority.

Certificate in Mental Health and Deafness

BSMHD supported the development of the Certificate in Mental Health and Deafness course by the University of Birmingham.

The programme has been developed through a unique collaboration between the University of Birmingham, professionals within NHS specialist services and the Third sector. It has benefited from being generated by BSL users and hearing colleagues to ensure it is both accessible and acceptable to deaf and hearing participants. It is to be delivered in BSL & English with interpreters and will make use of a range of distance learning resources. The programme is aimed at workers within specialist deaf services and generic mental health services available at two levels – the Certificate for those without professional qualifications and the Advanced Certificate for those with existing professional qualifications. Both courses started in March 2010 and will run over a period of 18 months involving 14 days attendance spread across that period at the University of Birmingham plus work to be completed within your own locality. Ffurther details can be obtained from Sobrina Edwards, Institute of Applied Social Studies, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, B15 2TT Email: CMHD@contacts.bham.ac.uk Tel: 0121 414 5711.
