Certificate in Mental Health and Deafness BSMHD supported the development of the Certificate in Mental Health and Deafness course by the University of Birmingham. The programme has been developed through a unique collaboration between the University of Birmingham, professionals within NHS specialist services and the Third sector. It has benefited from being generated by BSL users and hearing colleagues to ensure it is both accessible and acceptable to deaf and hearing participants. It is to be delivered in BSL & English with interpreters and will make use of a range of distance learning resources. The programme is aimed at workers within specialist deaf services and generic mental health services available at two levels – the Certificate for those without professional qualifications and the Advanced Certificate for those with existing professional qualifications. Both courses started in March 2010 and will run over a period of 18 months involving 14 days attendance spread across that period at the University of Birmingham plus work to be completed within your own locality.
