To this end we provide residential and supported housing in London and the Midlands and a range of day and community support services, especially advocacy and outreach work. Our projects have grown from joint work with the specialist mental health services for D/deaf people. We aim to create accessible services through recruiting and developing D/deaf and hearing staff to communicate effectively through sign language and being deaf aware. Visit www.signcharity.org.uk for more information on the services provided. In order to make a larger difference to the poor access to the NHS experienced by most D/deaf and hard of hearing people we have launched a major campaign entitled "Reaching Deaf Minds...for healthy deaf lives" which is working in partnership with likeminded charities to campaign for equal access for all d/Deaf people to primary care services. Our campaign website www.reachingdeafminds.org.uk is developing fast as a portal for information on deafness, mental health and NHS access. At Mayflower Hospitals we have forensic medium secure services for Deaf people, the only unit of its type in the country. This is includes gender specific male and female services. We also operate a further medium secure service for deaf males whose needs are characterised by their complexity and challenging behaviour. These services have been quoted in National Institute for Mental Health, Mental Health and Deafness "Towards Equity and Access" Best Practice Guidance. This is an implementation guide for the consultation document "Sign of the Times" July 2002. Please go to www.dh.gov.uk and enter the title into the search facility to download the full version.
