BSMHD 2007 Annual Conference

'After TEA: The Future for Mental Health Services for Deaf People'

Thursday, 24 May 2007
The Council House, Bristol, BS1 5TR.
9.00am - 5.00pm

A one day multi-disciplinary conference for all mental health professional and those in allied professions who work with deaf people.

After TEA . For the past two years the development of Mental Health Services for Deaf People and providing access for deaf people to mainstream health services has been dominated by the implementation of the recommendations in Towards Equity and Access the Department of Health report published in March 2005. With the work of the TEA Implementation Panel coming to a close and the emergence of the Disability Equality Duty the focus for the coming years will shift. The conference will open with a presentation by Herbert Klein and Lloyd Wint, who have been working for the last two years as TEA Implementation Officers, highlighting the successes they have had promoting better access for deaf people to services in Primary Care Trusts.

The Future for Mental Health Services for Deaf People . You can influence the development of Mental Health Services for Deaf people by participating in the Conference Debate, which will be introduced by two important new initiatives: Reforming the Commissioning of Specialised Mental Health Services for Deaf People - Nick Kitson and Paul Stemman, SIGN. A three year project to establish and implement an appropriate commissioning structure and patient pathways; Mental Health and Deafness, an Integrated Approach - Mike Adamson, RNID. Developing a new service taking a whole systems approach with two key components: the ‘Recovery Model’ and the notion of the ‘Therapeutic Community’.

Other Presentations Include: Prison Scoping Exercise and Prison In-Reach Project - Amy Izycky and Manjit Gahir, Rampton Hospital. The Prison Scoping Exercise identified the numbers of deaf prisoners currently detained. The Prison In-Reach Project identifies and makes mental health assessments of deaf prisoners and recommendations for more appropriate care; Suicide in the Deaf: A systematic literature review - Oliver Turner, Manchester University. Establishing the incidence and prevalence of suicidal behaviour in the deaf population, describing risk factors for suicidal behaviour and approaches to intervention and prevention; The Healthy Minds Project - Caroline Doherty, National Deaf Children’s Society. Developing a Healthy Minds Resource Pack to help professionals and parents of deaf children to implement strategies for promoting a positive mental health approach to deafness.

Conference Chair: Carolyn Nabarro, Deaf Equality Officer, Bristol City Council. Conference Sponsor: SIGN. The BSMHD Annual General Meeting will be held during the lunch-break.
