Deaf Action, formerly known as the Edinburgh & East of Scotland Deaf Society, is a long established (since 1835) voluntary organisation and registered charity providing a range of services to deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people, their families and carers. It is managed by an elected Executive Council of whom at least 51% must themselves be deaf. Working primarily in the areas of Edinburgh, East Lothian, West Lothian and Midlothian, but also providing services in areas further afield (eg. Borders, Fife, Falkirk and Highland) its staff work to enhance the quality of life of deaf people and raise society's awareness of their needs in partnership with a range of authorities, organisations, communities and individuals. Deaf Action provides the following services:
  • social work assessment and care management service
  • assessment for and provision of specialist equipment
  • communication support
  • supported care accommodation for deaf people with additional needs
  • deaf equality/awareness and British Sign Language training
  • youth & community services
  • advice and information
  • social and leisure activities
