1st March 2004: Latest news from the Reaching Deaf Minds Campaign

Reaching Deaf Minds is a key part of Sign's work to make health and social care providers aware of the need to promote positive mental health for all d/Deaf people, parent/carers, educators and employers. At the heart of Reaching Deaf Minds is a campaign to ensure the Government, Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts (and Councils with social care responsibilities) include d/Deaf people in their strategic planning and use them to monitor the quality and performance of local services. Reaching Deaf Minds aims to enable d/Deaf people to gain access to appropriate primary care services, so from the onset, they are less likely to feel distressed and isolated, and therefore, at less risk of developing mental health problems.

Sign is a member of the UKCoD (United Kingdom Council on Deafness) and BSMHD (British Society for Mental Health and Deafness) and seeks the support of their members to change the attitude of primary care professionals towards prioritising the needs of d/Deaf people in Britain. We need you to help us lobby local, national health and social care organisations and the government to respect deaf people's emotional needs. You can sign up your support by emailing us at [email protected]
